Calisthenics is a uniquely Australian sport which combines elements of gymnastics, dance, march and stage production into intricate and entertaining team performances. Although centred primarily in Victoria, the sport is nation-wide, with National competitions being held in a different State each year.

Calisthenics is the modern day descendant of Physical Culture. From its beginnings during the Victorian Gold Rush era to its current version, its aim has been the promotion and enjoyment of physical fitness. It was designed to be practised in a confined area by a large number of people at one time. Gradually it has developed away from the "physical jerks"style into a beautiful stage performance involving a team of girls performing fluid routines to music.

Public classes began in the 1880's and, by 1903, the Royal South Street Society had introduced calisthenics to its famous eisteddford in Ballarat. The competition in Ballarat was, and still is, the focus for many clubs in Australia. By the 1930's, calisthenics was introduced into the Victorian State schools, and colleges and clubs emerged throughout Victoria and South Australia.

Today, there are approximately 300 calisthenics clubs across Australia, attracting between 15000 and 16000 participants.
