In 1901, the American government formed Cotabato as a province. It covered what are presently known as North and South Cotabato, Maguindanao, Sultan Kudarat and Sarangani. From the 1930s to the 1960s, Christian settlers from Luzon and Visayas established homes in Central Mindanao, which was then considered Muslim territory.
