The British 1797 "Cartwheel" Pennies, designed by Matthew Boulton, were the first copper pennies to be minted, pennies previously being made from silver. They were also amongst the first coins to be minted on a steam driven coin press.

The reverse of these coins is upside down to the obverse. This is normal.

They were not intended to have a hole through them, making it worthless as a collectible coin.
