How are you, beautiful?' is an English equivalent of 'Come sta, bella?'

The interrogative 'come' means 'how'. The indicative present 'sta' means '[he/she/it] stands, [you] stand'. The feminine singular adjective 'bella' means 'beautiful'.

Is Jewish an ethnicity?

Yes. It is unique in religious groups, in that it is both an ethnic and religious group. Some Jews do not see themselves as ethnic Jews, but do follow Judaism (some Arab Jews, Berber Jews, etc.). Others see themselves as ethnic Jews, but don't follow Judaism (secular Jews, Christian Jews, Muslim Jews, etc.) Both views hold water. Jews as a religious group used to rarely intermix with other groups, making them their own people. They identify with Hebrew/Israelite descent as well. There are many Jewish ethnic subgroups as well. The largest Jewish peoples are: Ashkenazis, or German Jews. They are found in Germanic and Slavic countries, and have origins in Germany. They are also found in France, as well as in the Jewish diaspora (United States, Australia, etc.). They are the largest Jewish people in Israel, as well as the largest in the world! Saphardis, or Spanish Jews. These Jews are found in Spain, Portugal, France and North Africa. Many were persecuted in Spain and left to the north (France) and the south (North Africa). They are the second largest Jewish group, in both Israel and the world. Mizrahis, or Middle Eastern Jews. They are found in the Middle East and North Africa. A subgroup of this group are the Yemenite Jews. They are the third largest Jewish group, and sometimes seen as the "purest" (most Jewish). This is due to the fact that Jews around the world look very similar to the majority non-Jewish ethnic group in the same country. Two other subgroups that are based on linguistic/cultural background are the Arab Jews, Kurdish Jews, Persian Jews and Berber Jews. Those are the three largest groups. There are smaller groups of European Jews, African Jews, Indian Jews and Chinese Jews, including: Bene Roma (Italian Jews) - not the only Jews in Italy, there are also Ashkenazi/Saphardi Italians. Romaniotes (Greek Jews) Indian Jews - Cochin Jews (Malayali Jews), Bene Israel (Marathi Jews), Baghdadi Jews (Arab/Marathi Jews), Bnei Menashe (Mizo and Kuki Jews) and finally Bene Ephraim, or Telugu Jews. Kaifeng Jews (Chinese Jews) Georgian Jews Armenian Jews Mountain Jews (Azeri and Dagestani Jews) Bukhari Jews Beta Israel (Ethiopian Jews)

What does the name Benjamin mean?

Benjamin, from the Old Testament (Genesis 46), is one of the original twelve tribes of Israel, named after the youngest of twelve sons of Jacob (Israel) and one of two sons of Rachel, the other being Joseph. "Ben" means "son" in Hebrew and denotes "son of" in Arabic, while Jamin happens to be mentioned as a son of Simeon, second-born of Israel, and may be a derivative of Jacob, but this is unknown by this author. Jamin may also connote a balm, fruit or spice to indicate a family industry or type of merchant, as was commonly done, but this is also unknown. The name Benjamin can interchangeably both literally and figuratively mean "Son of Jamin" or "Son of Jacob," "Son of Israel" or, more generally, "son of Israel," meaning a son of the nation of Israel, a son of the religion of Judaism or a son of Yahweh/Jehovah/God. The plural, "bene," would mean "sons of." Commonly, this author uses "Ben" in the context of "son-of-a-gun," often substituting more forceful words at the end, depending on need. In fact, "son-of-a-jamin" or "sons-of-a-jamin" might become popular (and quite accurate) expressions of profanity soon and, oddly, carry no malice, instead indicating lighthearted irreverence, though many a fellow with this name has disagreed; hearing their mothers hollar at them for some misdeed during their formative years, to them their name often sounds like extremely angry profanity when they hear "Ben-e-jamin!" from a distance. Rolls off the tongue quite well. Yits ya right in the gut, it does. It's been a curse word for centuries and nobody's known it except for those with the name!

Did early Jews make the pyramids for the Egyptian Pharaohs?

"This bit of accepted wisdom, that "...the Pyramids [were] built by slaves who were Jews.." (as stated in your message of 1 September), is a canard that does not deserve repetition. First, it is anachronistic and illogical. The "Pyramids" -- presumably the three great pyramids of Gizah and perhaps the earlier pyramids to the south, including the Step Pyramid of Sakkara -- were built in the Third and Fourth Dynasties, 2650-2575 BC and 2575-2467 BC. The Jews did not exist at that time. The ancestors of the Jews, the Hebrews or "Children of Israel" -- Bene Yisra'el -- did not enter Egypt until centuries later. If one looks at the biblical narrative, Joseph, son of Jacob aka Israel, who brought the people of Israel into Egypt to settle in the land of Goshen, was driven in a chariot just behind Pharaoh's. The Egyptians did not have the wheel when the great pyramids were built. By the time the Egyptians had wheels, and horses and chariots, the great pyramids were ancient. Even if one were to determine that the migration of the Sumerian/Chaldean Abraham from the Sumerian city of Ur to the land of the Canaanites took place around the predynastic or early dynastic periods of ancient Egypt, there would still have been no Jews in Egypt at the time -- or anywhere else for that matter. Second, recent scholarship on ancient Egypt has suggested -- concluded, perhaps -- that the pyramids were built by corvees of native Egyptians conscripted into temporary service on the pyramids, probably during the flood season when their labor on the farm could be spared. Managing these labor gangs were professional craftsmen whose villages near the pyramids have been under excavation and study".Ronald Hilton - 9/6/01The pulling of large rocks in ancient Egypt was done by oxen.
