The Motown Record Company was founded by Berry Gordy, Jr. in 1958 after he had been in the army and owned a record store. In 1958 he produced two records, one by The Miracles and another by Herman Griffin. January 12, 1959 he borrowed $800 dollars and officially started his record label, which grew to be a huge success.

The usual answer is January 1959, which is when Berry Gordy formed Tamla Records. Motown Records was formed in August 1959, and the Motown Record Corporation (the group company which operated both those labels, and which most people are thinking of when they say "Motown") was incorporated in April 1960.

There was a Motown division called Tamla-Motown, that distributed US recordings as well as a number of UK labels under it's umbrella such as Gull. The 1960's Motown started in the UK by using various labels: Stateside, Fontana, London and Oriole before starting it's own Tamla-Motown label.

Motown is a derived/contrived word created by Berry Gordy,Jr. Since Detroit was called The Motor City because of the cars that were made there. Berry coined it MOTOWN and thus created a name for his record company. Though other names were experimented, this is the one that 'stuck'.
