Used the Hotel from 1969 to 1972 for lunches - one had to pay in US$.
I was working on Airbus A300 at the time - office was in Leonrodstrasse. Not much else known, I moved on to DHC7 in Toronto.
I remember my mom going there almost every day... or at least pretty often... and taking me with her to the hotel. She always visited "Mr. Wiggins" of the newspaper shop in the basement and would have an endless chat, I remember... :-) ... me, little boy at that time... probably 2 or 3 years old... that was round 1980 I guess...
does the hotel columbia in munich still exsist
I'm trying to find the address of the US Army Hotel Columbia in Munich. So far I have not found any info. Three years ago my wife and I went in seach of it--we checked a 2 block radius of Rotkreuz Platz--the bus stop where we'd get off and walk a few blocks to the Columbia. No luck. We'll try again in November, this time asking at a Gastaette that was there when I stayed at the Columbia. BTW, there is another question about this place on WIKI. Look under, "What is the name of the US Army hotel..?"
The exact address I don't remember, but it was 2 blocks from Rotkreuz Platz. I don't think it's there anymore because 3 years ago I tried to find it Your question got me digging and I found an old brochure from the Columbia Hotel: Jagdstrasse, 8. I used the Columbia Hotel enroute from Bamberg to Garmisch in November 1956. We couldn't make connections in Munich for the train to Garmisch and had to stay overnight. I remember taking a streetcar from the Main Bahnhof and having to disembark and walk perhaps a half mile. I recall that the area between the streetcar stop and the Columbia still had some bombed out buildings that hadn't been reconstructed. As I recall the room, which was quite adequate cost us around $1.00 each, we were both enlisted men with the rank of E4. In the morning we took a cab back to the bahnhof and the driver somehow managed to avoid the area that had not yet been rebuilt.
