I would think it derives from a 7th Ancient World Wonder, called The Colossus of Rhodes. Presumingly an over 100 ft tall statue of a Greek Titan, Helios, G-d of the Sun, (one of) the tallest statues of the period, built around 300BC at the entrance of Rhodos' harbor. (and later destroyed by an earthquake). However, there's no archeological proof for its existence.
