A volcanic mountain is a mountain formed by volcanic action. It is usually cone-shaped with a depression on top, which is where the crater is, or was, in the case of extinct volcanoes. A caldera is a depression formed by an extremely large, explosive volcanic eruption. The largest eruptions drain huge amounts of magma from underground, causing the ground above to collapse into the space left behind.
Found on mountains, calderas look like volcanic craters that were left from an eruption, however they are not actually volcanic craters. The word comes from the Latin caldaria, meaning cooking pot.
When a well is drilled and the drill is removed, all that is left is a hole in the earth/rock. If left that way, the hole could partially or completely collapse. To avoid this, a casing is inserted into the well hole. Usually this is a metal pipe, but it does not have to be made of metal. Wood mountain ski park closed in 1999 following extreme snowfall causing the roof of the day lodge to collapse. A few bad seasons prior to this resulted in a lack of money to replace the chalet, so it closed. Shortly afterwards what was left of the chalet was arsoned, and has been left that way since.
