Well, both. Most types of pomegranates are deciduous but there are varieties that are evergreen such as the 'Vietnam'. Vietnam pom is also able to produce fruit in areas of high humidity where normal pomegranates such as 'wonderful' thrive but have trouble bringing fruit to maturity due to humidity and heavy rains that cause the fruit to crack and subsequently rot.

Go to the Sierra Nevada Mountains of California in the summer to gain the experience of the Central Highlands of South Vietnam; and drive north thru Sacramento in California along Interstate 5 to see the "rice fields" on either side of the freeway to envision what US grunts had to be choppered into during air assaults.
