What is chorlea?

Cholera, sometimes known as Asiatic or epidemic cholera, is an infectious gastroenteritis caused by enterotoxin-producing strains of the bacterium Vibrio cholerae.[1][2] Transmission to humans occurs through eating food or drinking water contaminated with Vibrio choleraefrom other cholera patients. The major reservoir for cholera was long assumed to be humans themselves, but considerable evidence exists that aquatic environments can serve as reservoirs of the bacteria.Vibrio cholerae is a Gram-negative bacterium that produces cholera toxin, an enterotoxin, whose action on the mucosal epithelium lining of the small intestine is responsible for the disease's most salient characteristic, exhaustive diarrhea.[1] In its most severe forms, cholera is one of the most rapidly fatal illnesses known, and a healthy person's blood pressure may drop to hypotensive levels within an hour of the onset of symptoms; infected patients may die within three hours if medical treatment is not provided.[1] In a common scenario, the disease progresses from the first liquid stool to shock in 4 to 12 hours, with death following in 18 hours to several days, unless oral (or, in more serious cases, intravenous) rehydration therapy is provided.[3][4]It is estimated that most cases of cholera are unreported due to poor surveillance systems, particularly in Africa. Fatality rates are 5% of total cases in Africa, and less than 1% elsewhere.[5] For a map of recent international outbreaks, see:[3]

What is the height of a Smurf?

The Smurfs are said to be "just 3 apples high". The heights of apples vary, from 4 to 6 inches, depending on color and type, but 5 inches is a good average figure to use. From this we derive a height of 15 inches. Compare this with the average height of a man, which is 69.2 inches. (A man is all we need to compare to, as there was only one female Smurf.)Now the average width of a man is 16.5 inches at the shoulder (or 23.84% of his height), and the Smurfs, while not shaped entirely like us, are somewhat proportionate to us. That is to say, they are neither unusually wide or unusually narrow. Thus one could one could say they are 3.6 inches wide at the shoulder, approximately, based on 23.84% of 15 inches. Or more smurfventionally "just point seven two of an apple wide".While on the subject, and to forestall the next obvious question, the other salient measurement - also proportionate to an average human male - would be 1.3 inches, or more smurfpropriately speaking "just two grapes long".
