It teaches us that there is only one God and we should not put any deities or Idols into Gods Level. It also teaches us a basic way of life, of submitting to God's will.

More in detail the Pillars prescribe us to be regular in our prayers, pay a poor "tax" (a portion of your wealth is supposed to be paid to a poor person or a relief agency who will for you put it to use to help a poor person), Fast during Ramadan, (this humbles us, makes us appreciate the food we can afford more and lets us experience what a poor person who cannot afford food feels) and perform Haji (a pilgrimage to the Mecca) at least once in our lifetime if it is possible.

The Islamic people basically have to follow these "guidelines" because their G-D "Allah" told them to. The purpose is to make them better people and to teach them good deeds, but mostly to keep the Islamic tradition going from generation to generation.

The Islam five pillars and their significance are as follow:

  1. Testimony that no God except the one and only one God, the Creator and that prophet Muhammad is His messenger. This persuades Muslims not to obey any one in something that against God commands or against His prophet guides
  2. Praying (5 times a day). This persuades Muslims to be always remembering God the Creator and His prophet. Hence this persuades then not to do any wrong.
  3. Alms giving (or zakat). This strengthens the social relations and leads to solidification between the poor and the rich.
  4. fasting Ramadan. This persuades Muslims to be more devoted to God will and refrain themselves from disobeying him and they become more tending to help the poor.
  5. hajj. This persuades Muslims to feel that they are equal and the preference is only in the degree of their piety.

I addition to the above, denying any of the above five pillars, intentionally and knowingly, expels the Muslim out of Islam religion and considers him/her no longer Muslim.

AnswerThe 5 pillars is what makes up Islam, if you follow them, then you are a true Muslim, but if one of them is missing, then you wont be following the full religion.

for example, if you had a temple, and it had five walls to keep it up, but if you took one of the walls away, then the temple would falll, and the temple wouldn't be complete
they provide the ritual obligations that need to be followed
The five pillars form the basis of the religion of Islam. These are the foundation of Islam and every Muslim has to follow all the pillars in order to perfect his or her faith. The pillars are the most basic ingredient of Islam and as such faith and practice on them is necessary for all Muslims.

- Or They provide the ritual obligations that need to be followed.

The five Islam pillars are very important because all the Islam teachings, principles, and morals are based on these five pillars. As the pillars are important for a building the pillars are important for the Islam religion.

Moreover, if you deny intentionally any of the five Islam pillars you are considered out of Islam faith and considered no longer Muslim or follower of Islam.
