If we're talking about the owner-operator of a small business retail store, with only his/her spouse and offspring to help out, the job analysis is everything,

  • from conception of the idea to buy or start up a (or continue the family's operation of the family) store,
  • to actually starting it up or taking over operations, taking inventory of all assets, including assets that are intangible (such as trademarks, copyrights, patents, design patents, and claims, current lawsuits - which are contingent assets),
  • understanding and perhaps developing a written marketing plan and a business plan for the store, including any reductions or increases in operations or outlets;
  • doing an analysis of website potential for marketing, publicity, obtaining employees, website offerings and sales;
  • doing the purchasing of inventory and analyzing what is needed in the area and the price at which it could sell, and the potential profitability;
  • determining pricing and any dynamic pricing (which generally depends on what competitors are offering and at what price, but could also depend upon the day of the week or the time of day);
  • scheduling of coverage of store hours; keeping control over the cash and monitoring cash position;
  • training, hiring and firing employees;
  • determining how payroll is to be handled (such as by classic payroll with payroll deductions and insurance; or with independent contractors and assessing the risks of being wrong and having IRS penalties to deal with);
  • borrowing moneys when needed;
  • trying to raise financing through sale of equity interests in the business;
  • getting self education in needed areas;
  • becoming proficient with the computer and internet advertising especially with search advertising;
  • making sure your political contacts are established and nurtured; getting involved in civil activities in the area; running for local office; getting on local committees; helping raise funds for the community;
  • trying to set up new products and services and get rid of products and services that are becoming less profitable; coping with the increased costs of energy and food;
  • trying to figure out how you can obtain medical and dental coverage for your family when there are no profits to be able to pay the $1,000 to $1,500 per month in costs;
  • trying to figure out how to send your children to college at a cost of perhaps $50,000 per year per child (when in college) and where the money is going to come from when you aren't making any money in your small business;
  • and doing the 1,000 other things that I haven't been able to cover.

I hope this encourages you to go into small business and not look for a job with the county driving the road and bridge improvements truck for $20/hour and full medical and dental benefits.
