What is the incident in the Phantom of the Opera?

If by "incident" you mean plot, that's easy. La Carlotta (the star) quits and Christine Daae gets her big debut. She was receiving lessons from a man in the shadows. Her father, now deceased, said he would send her an angel of music. She believes this voice is her angel, but it is the Phantom. Raoul, an old friend of Christine's gets close to her again. He still has deep feelings for her. The Phantom, however, also had feelings for ms. Daae. The Phantom had grown up in the Opera House. It was his playground as a child, and the outlet for his musical soul in his later years. But, because of his horrible disfigurement, he dared not show his face. This Opera House was his entire world. He knew nothing of the world beyond. He wanted to help Christine's career take off, in hopes it would make her love him, despite his appearance. But she loved her childhood sweetheart, Raoul. The Phantom went crazy, kidnapping Christine. But, in the end, realizes she'll be much happier with Raoul, and lets them go, and disappears into oblivion. Years later, when Christine is dead. Raoul goes to her grave, and finds Erik has left a black rose upon her tombstone.
