Emma Lazarus. The poetess was more or less manipulated into this task by Pulitzer and other Newspaper tycoons. the saying was the Statue of Liberty was largely (built) by the Newspapers as they made all sorts of pushing for it. the statue was built ten years after the centennial of Us-l876.-statue went up in l886. The newspapers remained the driving force.
