A faceoff is the method used to begin play in Ice Hockey.
The two teams line up in opposition to each other, and the opposing centres attempt to gain control of the puck after it is dropped between their sticks by an official.
Hockey play starts with a face-off where the referee drops the puck between two opposing players at center ice. Play begins when the puck hits the ice.
Some people call it the centrepass (because the ball is passed from the centre of the field) adn others call it the hitoff. Most just call it "the start of the game".
