The fertile land on either side of the Nile River is primarily due to the annual flooding of the river, which deposits nutrient-rich silt onto the surrounding fields. This natural irrigation system replenishes the soil, making it highly productive for agriculture. Additionally, the Nile's flow helps sustain a consistent water supply, further enhancing the fertility of the land. As a result, the Nile Valley has supported agriculture and civilization for thousands of years.
A floodplain is the land that is covered by water when a river overflows it's banks. When this happens, silt and clay are deposited over time and the land on either side of the river flattens out. Any depressions in the land will hold water when the river level returns to normal after flooding and therefore more clay and silt will be deposited there filling it up.
