On recent computers the 25 pin D-sub is for the parallel port that is used to connect a printer to.
On older (back in the mid to early 90s) there was also a 25 pin D-sub that was used as a COM (communication) port.
The difference between the two is the printer port is a female port and the COM port is a male port.
