In terms of total tonnage, the Alaskan pollock fishery is far and away the largest commercial fishery on the west coast of the US, landing over 3 billion pounds a year. The Pacific salmon species group is probably second, landing about 885 million pounds in 2007. Among individual salmon species, pink and sockeye are usually the largest. Nearly 500 million pounds of pink salmon were landed in 2007. Pacific cod and and Pacific whiting are next, each landing nearly 500 million pounds per year.
In terms of value, the Pacific salmon fishery is the most valuable. The 885 million pounds of salmon landed in 2007 were worth about $381 million. By contrast, the Alaskan pollock were worth $297 million, even though the total tonnage of pollock was over 3 times the tonnage of salmon.
