The highest mountain in Northern Ireland is the 2,786 feet (850 m) Slieve Donard. It is just south of the coastal resort of Necastle in County Down.
It can be an easy mountain to ascend, but like all mountain walks it pays to beware of the weather. It also depends on what path you climb. I've been at the summit in rain, hail, snow and sunshine. Best of all is a bright clear day, when the view stretches to the Isle of Man and maybe even north Wales. The sea to summit ascent is possible in an energetic afternoon, if you are reasonably fit, from Newcastle beach.
