The latest update for minecraft is currently 1.5.2 (as of 21 May 2013)
The 1.5.2 update includes:
- * A bunch of bug fixes!
- * Performance improvements when using HD texture packs
- * Many improvements for Minecraft Realms (will become publicly available "soon")

∙ 11y agoThe next updates for Minecraft can all be found in the Minecraft Wiki listed in the related links below. They preview the updates in what's called a "snapshot." A snapshot is used to test an upcoming update and is a public pre-release to the next update. To install a snapshot, you must replace your minecraft.jar in your .minecraft\bin folder. If you are confused on how to get to .minecraft, search %appdata% (including the %'s) and click on .minecraft, followed by bin. Replace the minecraft.jar with the snapshot version, and there you have it! Enjoy!

It seems it averages around 3 months. It's been updated in little as 1 month and as long as 5+ months.
