Latin speakers don't name numbers the way English speakers do. For example, Latin speakers would say "two and seventy" instead of "seventy-two".

It's the same way with fourteen, or four and ten. Four = quattuor, ten = decim, and and = et; so fourteen is quattuor et decim (four and ten).

However, the word et is assumed, so one takes the word et out and presses quattuor and decem together to make quattuordecim.

For simplicity's sake, fourteen is quattuordecim.
