The contractions start from a node in the myocardiumcalled the SA node (sino-atrial node), which produces the stimulatory signals in a rhythmic mode. As the stimulatory signals move throughout the myocardial muscle, it contracts.

The outer surface of the heart, the epicardium, and the inner surface of the heart, the endocardium, are both epithelial tissue and not contractile. The middle layer of the heart, the myocardium, is the muscle tissue which contracts causing the heart to pump blood.
