Oklahoma. The least populated State would have to be Alaska when calculated "per square mile". Oklahoma doesn't even come close with about 50 residents per square mile. Alaska has about 1.1 residents per square mile. The US has about 80 residents per square mile.

Loving County, in the State of Texas is the lowest populated county in the United States. The population in Loving County as of January 2009 is 64 people. Loving County only has a courthouse, gas station and a few houses. A non denominational church that has 60- members. There is no school, clinic, hospital or cemetery. The volunteer fire department has 6 members and responds to an average 3 calls per year.
