The legal age to consume or buy alcohol in Italy is 18. It was raised from 16 to 18in 2013 by the (Italian) Health Ministry. The new law also raises fines for minors in posession.

It is legal for 14-15 year olds to drink if the alcohol is provided by a parent or legal guardian. The age for purchasing alcohol is 16. However, under article 689 of the Italian Codice Penale (Penal Code) a restaurant owner/ innkeeper can be prosecuted for serving alcohol to a minor under 16 years of age (as well as a mentally infirm person), so you may find they won't serve the minor. I have read that this law is very rarely enforced. There is no lower limit for drinking alcohol in Italy at all. However, the last message is absolutely correct. It is not illegal to drink at 14 or 15, even in a restaurant, and you do have to be 16 to purchase.

I do not think that there is really anything enforced at all. I wen to Italy with my family when I was 13, and I was served wine with dinner every night.

By 2013 the national minimum drinking age was raised from 16 to 18 (Law: D.L. 158/2012). The law was controversial because one part of the criminal penal code wasn't changed so it wasn't illegal for barceepers or restaurants to serve alcohol to minors from the age of 16, but selling it in a store was illegal if the person wasn't 18. Then the government announced that also serving alcohol, is a way of "selling" it, so from now on it was illegal for minors under the age of 18 to buy or consume alcohol in public.
