All students between the ages of 7 and 18, who have not completed grade 12 or the requirements for a certificate of initial mastery and/certificate of advanced mastery, are required to attend school unless otherwise exempted by law. Any parent who fails to send a student to school within three days of notification by the district that their student is not complying with compulsory attendance requirements may be issued a citation by the district for the student's failure to attend school. Violation is a Class C infraction of law and is punishable by a court-imposed fine up to $150 as provided by ORS 339.925. As a further incentive, to stay in school ORS chapter 807 requires students to provide proof of school attendance to get a driver's permit or license. If a student has 10 unexcused absences in a row or 15 days in a grading period, and is between the ages of 15 - 18 years old, the school may provide attendance information to the Department of Motor Vehicles to have the student's license suspended. All first time license or permit applications will have to provide proof of attendance to the DMV.
