Smallmouth spawn in spring. The males construct the nests, and the females come in, spawn, then leave to recover from spawning. The eggs hatch in a few days, and the male guards the newly hatched young, called fry at this stage. They do not eat, rather they rely on an egg sack for nutrition. As the sack is consumed, the tiny fish grow rapidly, and begin to feed on zoo plankton. The male parent leaves them, they grow to two inches and begin to feed on insects and tiny minnows. At this stage, they are called fingerlings. They grow five to six inches their first year, and feed now mainly on small fish, crayfish, and frogs. They can live to 16 years, and grow throughout their lives.

Are crappie bass and catfish all freshwater or saltwater game fish?

I am unsure what constitutes a 'Game Fish' but Crappie and Bass are freshwater fish. Catfish have a large variety and many are saltwater fish. Bass do have some varieties that are saltwater but most do not resemble the small or large mouth varieties that most people associate as 'bass.'
