The female cassowary lays between 3 and 8 eggs in a nest on the ground which is lined with leaves, twigs, sticks, bark, etc. She does not incubate the eggs.

The male cassowary raises the chicks and females are known to kill the chicks if given the opportunity.

Chicks stay with the male for around nine months, but it is several years before they reach reproductive age. A cassowary's lifespan can exceed 30 years in captivity.

The average ostrich lives for 30 - 40 years in the wild, but in captivity they can last anywhere from 50 - 70 years. Ostriches are able to mate by the age of three to four years old. After mating with a male, female ostriches lay around 10 - 70 eggs on the ground, sharing the nest. Ostrich eggs are the largest bird eggs on earth, measuring 11 x 18 centimeters across and weighing 1400 grams. They have a white, shiny tint to them so when exposed to the sun for short periods , they reflect the suns heat and don't end up overheating. The male ostrich will protect the nest of eggs laid by the several females he has mated with.

The nest is a slight hollow scratched into the ground. Only one of the females that laid the eggs will help hatch them, sitting on them during daytime. This female will move all eggs to the center of the nest, the safest spot. The female ostrich's colors are harder to see in the daylight as she watches over the nest. The male will protect them at night, when his dark colors make him unnoticeable in the dark. These eggs will begin to hatch in about forty days, and both the male and female will look after the chicks.
