Autism does not directly affect the life expectancy of a person with autism. That person can have a normal lifespan. However, autism can increase the chances of suffering from depression, which could increase the chance of suicide. No, they tend to have much shorter life spans. There are conditions that occur at a greater rate than average in people with autism that can make it more likely for them to have shorter lifespans, but autism is not the condition causing it.

No one dies from autism in the direct sense, but some people with low-functioning autism can have poor understanding of danger, therefore are more likely to die from accidents.

My nephew screamed in sheer terror when you'd cut his hair or trim his nails, but he loved chewing on electrical cords, would lick on & sometimes eat inappropriate things & had no fear of deep water.

He died 2 years ago when he got out of the backyard & found the creek before anyone found him.

It is also not uncommon for low-functioning autistic kids to run into traffic.

But probably only 10% of all kids with autism are this low-functioning.

The average life expectancy for an Autistic person* is the same as a person with any other neurology. Autism doesn't cause problems that would cause an Autistic person to die sooner than other people.

* Autistic people prefer identity-first language (e.g. Autistic person) over person-first language (e.g. person with autism) - unless an individual tells you otherwise, please use identity-first language.
