When it stops working. If you have the fluid and filter serviced on an average of every 32,000 to 36,000 miles, it should last a long time. When it stops shifting properly or starts shifting roughly or not down shifting properly, then I would worry about having it replaced.
Not necessarily; I purchased 1993 used and found that it was not shifting past 2nd gear. A Transmission Kit for $35.00 at an auto parts store & additional tranny fluid did the trick so I'd suggest taking it to a tranny specialist that is "referred" to you by a friend so you know you can trust them. However, I will say that with 178000 miles I'm replacing sensors like crazy!
