What is the lifespan of lotus flower?

I have some waterlilies growing in my koi pond. They will push up a lotus blossom every few months. You will see them come to the surface of the water over the course of a week and finally they will come through the surface When they do this they will open up with the morning sun and remain open all day. Then come evening they will close up for the night. They will do this for about 4-5 days and then sink back down into the pond and not come up again. Hope this helps.
