Roman Catholic AnswerBaptism makes you different than you were before, it makes you a Christian, and you are called to conform your life to Christ's. There are different kinds of ministry, but all Christians are called, just by the fact that they are baptized, to minister to each other: to feed the hungry, to give drink to the thirsty, to clothe the naked, to visit the prisoners, to shelter the homeless, to visit the sick, to bury the dead, to gives alms to the poor. They are also called to admonish the sinner, to instruct the ignorant, to counsel the doubtful, to comfort the sorrowful, to bear wrongs patiently, to forgive all injuries, to pray for the living and the dead: the corporal and spiritual works of mercy.

Why was Jesus' baptism a turning point in his life?

The four gospels all indicate that Jesus' baptism was the beginning of his public ministry. The gospels depict Jesus' baptism as part of God's plan for his life. This comes out very well in the Gospel of Luke, where the conception, and the birth of John the Baptism were surrounded by prodigious signs. John the Baptist is described as being the forerunner of Jesus. Therefore, it is not difficult to understand that Jesus' ministry would begin with his baptism by John, which was an endorsement of John's ministry, as well as being a symbol of the beginning of his own.
