Well there are two types of refrigerant used in automotive systems, R-12 which has been widely used on earlier models and the more evironmentally friendly R-134a used in all recent models. These two refrigents are notcompatible and must never be mixed or components will be damaged. I would suggest going to a qualified technician about converting a refrigerant system. I believe 1994-ish is when cars switched to R-134a, as R-12 was heavly damaging the ozone. It looks like the E.U. is banning R-134a around 2011, as R-134a is still damaging the ozone at a high rate. Not sure yet what they are switching to.
