It depends on who the person is talking to. If it a delusional being the theme would most likely revolve around psychosis. If the person is talking to a ghost or god it could have to do with religion and belief. If the person is talking to an imaginary friend it could have to do with safety, as in something traumatic occurred in this person's life and they rely on the imaginary friend as if the friend were a safety net.
