From Amazon discussion forum:
ambient light sensor. Amazon has yet to enable it in the firmware.
Word on the street was that is WAS functioning to control the auto-screen brightness, but it was disabled in the first update Amazon pushed to the Fire. Most likely because it would really chew up the battery.
the dot you see is an ambient light sensor used to make the screen more visible in low lighting conditions.
The little dot is a sensor for the sun when you are outsite or in different lighting.
Per the Amazon.com website the kindle fire does not have a camera.

Start at the bottom left dot, go up to the top left dot but carry on as though there is another invisible dot above it, then go diagonal right to the top middle dot and carry on to the middle right dot and carry on again as if there is another invisible dot to the right of the bottom row of dots, then go left to the bottom left dot, then go diagonal right to the top right dot.
put the left most dot on the shadow line of the planet to the left, the top dot touching the left tip of the castle and the bottom dot on the top edge of the craetr and GO.
Start off at the bottom left dot, go up to the top left dot and carry on as though there is another invisible dot above it, go down diagonal right to the top middle dot and carry on to the right middle dot and carry on once more as though there is another invisible dot to the right of the bottom line of three, go left to the bottom left dot and then go diagonal right to the top right dot.
Simple case: First pin to the LEFT of a dot and/or a notch is pin 1. Chip with > 1 dot: The darker/deeper dot is the main dot, first pin to the left is pin 1. No dot or notch, just a semi circle on 1 side: First pin on the left is pin 1.
Its Called 'Scrumdiddliumcious'.
A little hard to describe, start on the bottom left dot, go upwards to the top left dot but do not stop, carry on going up as though there is another invisible dot above it (ONE LINE), go down diagonally right so the first dot you reach is the top line second left dot, carry on going to the bottom right dot (TWO LINES), go up to the top right dot and carry on up as though there is another invisible dot above it (THREE LINES), go down diagonally left to the top line second right dot, carry on going diagonal to the bottom left dot (FOUR LINES), then go right to the bottom right dot (FIVE LINES).
