The North Star, Polaris, is a fairly ordinary F7 star about 430 light years away. It is not particularly bright. Its importance lies in its apparent position directly (well, ALMOST directly) above the Earth's North Pole.
This position is entirely coincidental, since all of the stars have their own proper motions, and the Earth itself "wobbles" - or precesses - on its axis with a period of 25,800 years.
North Star points at True North, you can use a compass and north star to see how far off magnetic north is from your location. .

To navigate using the North Star, locate the North Star in the night sky, which is always positioned in the north. Use it as a reference point to determine your direction, as it remains relatively fixed while other stars appear to move throughout the night. By keeping the North Star in a specific position relative to your location, you can maintain a consistent heading.
The North Star (Polaris) does not get brighter as you travel north. It appears to be the same brightness regardless of your location on Earth. What changes is its position in the sky relative to your viewpoint as you move northward.
If you are at the North Pole, you'll see the star Polaris near the zenit (altitude almost 90 degrees).
The star "Polaris" is the North Star.
The angle between the north star and the horizon is roughly your position in degrees latitude. For example, look at the North Star and point one arm straight at it, and then hold your other arm level with the horizon. The angle between your arms is roughly the degrees of latitude of your location.
Northville, MI is at 42 degrees, 26 minutes North. The altitude of the North Star is between 42 degrees and 43 degrees, depending on the time. (Polaris isn't exactly at the North Pole; it is about 1/2 degree off.)
From any location north of the Equator: The north star (Polaris) is in the sky, always due north of you, and always as many degrees above the horizon as your latitude north of the equator. It makes no difference what time you look for it, or where you are in an east or west direction.
The North Star is a star that where ever you are, when you look at it, that is north. It helped explorers to know which way is north;)
