Most highly selective colleges (the Ivy Leagues, Stanford, UChicago, etc.) do not have cutoff test scores or cutoff GPAs that they use in admissions. Unlike large state schools, which use formulas to factor in GPA/scores, admissions at more selective schools are generally very holistic.
UChicago specifically states that even though the majority of their applicant pool has great numerical credentials, non-numerical components of the application are JUST AS IMPORTANT and admitted students have a wide variation of scores and GPAs.
For example, a student with a 2.0 GPA and a 1050/1600 SAT score could very well be admitted to UChicago IF he writes an absolutely amazing essay, gets terrific recommendations, and has oustanding extracurricular activities. Of course, with lower grades comes the need to balance with truly amazing accomplishments outside of the classroom- raising millions of dollars for charities, founding the next Microsoft, writing a bestseller, getting your plays recognized by Broadway. Yes, you're in high school, so it's very difficult to do these things, but it happens!
However the easiest way to get into UChicago or the school of your dreams IS to focus on your GPA. Though there's no official cutoff, admissions officers DO LOOK AT YOUR TRANSCRIPT EXTREMELY CAREFULLY. Challenge yourself with Honors/AP courses to get it up; most schools offer weighting and quality points for these harder classes.
In fact, UChicago publishes a list, in descending order of importance to them, of what they're looking for in the admissions office.
Very important admission factors:

Thus, GPA is not even a "very important factor" to them.
Also, a lot of kids who are admitted to Harvard/Yale/Princeton/Stanford are rejected by UChicago. Why? UChicago is unique because they're really scouring your essay for passion and most of all CREATIVITY. With a school motto as "the life of the mind," they want unique thinkers who will add new dimension to their campus. Thinking outside of the box for your essay will score you points in the application process. STAND OUT!! Don't just answer their essay questions, ask a question back or take a new spin to them! With strange topics like "How did you get caught?" they are looking for essays that are really different.
