There are a few important differences between GMO food and organic food. Some are:

• GMO foods are genetically engineered, often to be resistant to a synthetic herbicide or to produce an insecticide in the plant itself, by removing a gene from one species (often a bacteria) and inserting it into a totally different species (often corn or soy, but others, too). Organic foods do not contain any GMOs and are often grown from heirloom seeds that have been used for decades.
• GMO crops use synthetic fertilizers and pesticides. Organic foods are grown without using synthetic fertilizers and pesticides.
• The pesticides used on GMO crops may harm the soil, while growing organically builds up the soil.
• Processed foods that can contain GMO ingredients are allowed to have preservatives and other ingredients that may be harmful to health. Foods that are 100% organic do not contain GMOs or potentially harmful additives and preservatives.
