The main gas is carbon dioxide. We release this whenever we burn coal, oil or natural gas (the fossil fuels). Trees remove carbon from the atmosphere, but deforestation means that much of this carbon dioxide remains in the atmosphere. This is causing global warming, which causes the climate to change.

The main gas causing the accelerated greenhouse phenomenon is carbon dioxide, released when we burn fossil fuels (coal, oil and natural gas).

The natural greenhouse effect is caused by water vapor, carbon dioxide and other gases.

Carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane are causing the increased greenhouse effect which is giving us global warming.

Global warming is the cause of climate change.

Why is it difficult to identify any single cause of climate change?

It is not difficult. The one single cause of climate change is global warming. There are several causes of global warming, but the two main causes are the burning of fossil fuels (coal, oil and natural gas) and deforestation (cutting down trees which used to remove carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere). Both these mean more greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, and this is what is causing global warming which is causing climate change. Not difficult to identify at all!

How does too much CO2 in the atmosphere effect the climate?

CO2 is a greenhouse gas. Too much CO2 in the atmosphere will make the climate hotter because it acts like a 'greenhouse' or blanket as it insulates heat in the atmosphere. CO2 allows heat to pass into the atmosphere but it doesn't allow heat to pass out into space. Too much CO2 in the atmosphere would trap the heat in the atmosphere, causing climate change.

What is climate change and can you do anything about it?

Climate may change naturally or artificially. Our climate currently is changing primarily due to the human activity of burning fossil fuel. This releases some 30 billion tons of carbon dioxide into our atmosphere each year, which is a heat trapping "greenhouse" gas.

What is the scientific consensus on the causes and consequences of climate change?

Scientists agree that the cause of climate change is global warming, and that global warming is caused by increased levels of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, caused byThe burning of fossil fuels (coal, oil and natural gas) in industry, transport and the generation of electricity, which releases carbon dioxide.DeforestationCattle rearing and Poor agricultural practices which add methane.

Has the change from burning coal to gas changed our climate?

yes

Over using a certain natural resource such as Coal. As we mine for coal we are releasing dust and gas into the atmosphere which causes Global Warming and Climate Change.

Why does the United States need to find alternate energy sources?

Using coal oil and natural gas causes damage to the environment by adding greenhouse gases to the atmosphere. This is causing global warming and climate change.

What gas causes the ice to melt?

Gas does not directly cause Ice to melt. However if you are talking about glaciers then the gas Carbon Dioxide (CO2) causes the earths atmosphere to heat up (because it traps more of the Sun's heat) and this causes glaciers to melt - because the Earths climate is hotter.

What process causes nitrogen to be released as a gas?

Atmosphere causes 78% nitrogen to be released as a gas

What is one disadvantage of using natural gas as fuel?

It releases long-hidden carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, so it is contributing to climate change.

How can you change gas concentrations in the atmosphere?

The gas concentrations in atmosphere are large. Even if we try, we can change small amounts.

Why was the framework convention on climate change created by the UN?

The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) is an international environmental treaty started on 21 March 1994. It was set up to keep greenhouse gas levels low enough in the atmosphere to prevent dangerous changes to the climate. In the words of the UN: The UNFCCC objective is to "stabilize greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere at a level that would prevent dangerous anthropogenic interference with the climate system".
