Well, it's always up for different interpretation, but for me the main idea of the movie was highlighting the selfishness of humanity while also showing a compassionate side to humanity. Initially, the main character Jake intended to go to Pandora and get "in" with the Na'vi so he could persuade them to leave their Home Tree (selfish humanity)... but as he spent more time with them in his avatar body, he realized the purity of their customs and how in tune they are with all aspects of nature. They live as one with the world, and this changed Jake's heart.

I don't think there was an underlying philosophy. But if I had to guess the philosophy would be that humans are going to become so secular and selfish that we will destroy our own planet and then move on to other worlds to destory them too.
