A refracting telescope is a type of optical telescope. It was used in astronomical telescopes and spy glasses. Objective lens are used to produce the image.

Basically, the catadioptric telescope is just one of the 3 main types of the optical telescopes. The other 2 main types of optical telescopes are the refracting telescopes and the reflecting telescopes.
A telescope eyepiece usually has 2 lenses in an astronomical telescope, and it is designed to give a magnified view of the virtual image produced at the focal point of the main lens.
The aperture of the main lens or mirror, which also determines the light gathering power ------------------------- True but the quality of the mirrors or lenses (how near they are to a perfect shape for the design of telescope) determines the sharpness of the image.
The main lens or mirror produces a virtual image of the obect being looked at, and it occurs at a distance behind the lens (or in front of the mirror) equal to the focal length. The telescope also has an eyepiece whose function is to allow the oberver to see the virtual image. Many telescopes come with a range of different eyepieces that give different amounts of magnification.
The type of telescope is called a reflector. There are multiple subtypes of reflectors like a dobsonian, newtonian, RC, etc. Check out my youtube video on how to work with pictures taken from a telescope. youtu.be/M7-vLeVhM9g
Mainly, it has to have a large main lens, or main mirror.
The biggest telescopes are reflecting - instead of a main lens, they have a main mirror. Above a certain size, it is no longer feasible, or at least practical, to use lenses. The biggest telescopes are reflecting - instead of a main lens, they have a main mirror. A telescope consists of two lenses. 1) The main lens which collects the light ( it is relatively bigger that eyepiece). 2) Eye piece , through which we see. Magnification of a telescope depends on the focal length of the eye piece and the main lens. Magnification = Focal length of the main lens / Focal length of the eyepiece . For example : If the focal length of the main lens is 12 units and the focal length of the eyepiece is 2 units , then the magnification will be 12/2 = 6.When the focal length of the main lens is constant , the focal length of the eyepiece is inversely proportional to the magnification.
Both types of telescope collect and focus electromagnetic radiation for observational purposes, the difference is their band of observed frequencies. Radio telescopes are used for the radio frequencies ( ~3km - ~30cm) while optical telescopes are used for frequencies closer to visible light ( ~0.7μm - ~0.4μm). Optical telescopes may also be able to detect infrared and ultraviolet light.
