On occasions the VC did make a platoon, company, battalion sized battle; but for the most part they remained a guerrilla force. Vietnam was primarily a guerrilla war when combating the VC. When the NVA became more involved, they were the counterpart to the US Army (and US Marines)...and fighting became conventional. The NVA deployed armor; PT76 (76mm main guns) and T54/T55 medium tanks (100mm main guns), and artillery. The VC did not.

Actually it's a widely believed myth that guerrilla fighting provided a winning advantage to the Colonists. The tactics used to fight the Indians were quite different from those of fighting massed European armies. Our use of the tactics learned in fighting Indians (guerrilla tactics) inflicted many casualties upon the British, but if did not win battles. It wasn't until the Continental Army mastered the art of 18th century warfare -- standing in ranks and trading volleys and finally capturing the battle field at bayonet point, did we start winning battles.

Guerrilla warfare is and was a hit-and-run technique used in fighting a war; fighting of small bands using tactics such as sudden ambushes. It also usually involves fighting men who are not identified by uniform or any insignia. This makes it difficult to know who is an enemy and leads to killing of innocent people.
The American forces used what we call today, Guerrilla warfare; which is the Native American way of fighting.
Napoleon had trouble fighting the enemy because of the guerrilla fighters, they work in small groups to ambush French troops and then fled into hiding.
