The main purpose of the United Nations is to function as a representative assembly so that each membership country of the UN can have a diplomatic voice via its delegates to the UN. The hope is that the UN General Assembly can find a diplomatic solution to countries which find themselves in either civil conflict or in conflict with Another Country.
However unlike the League of Nations which preceded the UN and was ultimately a failure, the UN has the power to sanction countries that violate international law. These sanctions can be diplomatic, economic or military.
