Electricity-Sources of electricity are everywhere in the world. Worldwide, there is a range of energy resources available to generate electricity. These energy resources fall into two main categories, often called renewable and non-renewable energy resources. Each of these resources can be used as a source to generate electricity, which is a very useful way of transferring energy from one place to another such as to the home or to industry.

Non-renewable sources of energy can be divided into two types: fossil fuels and nuclear fuel.

What is the main power source?An item must meet the following definition in order to fall within scope of the RoHS Regulations:

• equipment which is dependent on electric currents or electromagnetic fields in order to work properly, or
• equipment for the generation, transfer and measurement of such currents.

'Dependent' means that the equipment needs electricity (for example, not petrol or gas) as its primary energy.

Example: A gas cooker may use electricity for a timer and clock, but its primary energy source is gas, and the cooker is therefore out of scope of the Regulations

Example: A gas heated tumble dryer requires electricity to power the tumbling action. The item is dependent on electricity to work properly, and is within the scope of the WEEE Regulations

The Regulations do not apply to products that can fulfil their main purpose without electricity.

Example: a talking teddy bear is still a teddy bear and can fulfil its main purpose as a comfort toy in the eyes of a child, even with the batteries removed; it doesn't require electricity to provide its main purpose and is outside scope of the Regulations.

Example: the main purpose of a massage chair is to provide a massage and cannot be regarded solely as a piece of furniture; it requires electricity to provide its main purpose and falls under the Regulations

Example: there is a point where the differential between the electronic and non electronic versions of a product becomes the primary discriminator. Both flash and non-flash disposable cameras are readily available. Although a disposable camera with a flash may still take a photo without the flash it would not fulfil its primary function of a flash camera.

If the Main power source is not electricity, then the item does not need to comply with RoHS.

If the main power source is electricity, then you need to check the voltage ratings.
