The wild Mustang herds were the primary source of horses for the tribes of Native Americans. If they could get their hands on escaped 'white man' horses that had finer breeding they would breed these to their Mustangs which improved their herds. These horses were used for hunting, building, travelling, ect.
Modern domesticated horses are more prone to parasites due to limited turnout areas, which mean that they come in closer contact with the parasites than do wild horses which can roam wide distances and stay clear of parasite infested manure. Also the use of Anthelimentics (deworming drugs) have increased parasite resistance to the drugs and then the horse cannot get rid of them through deworming.
There are two widely known ways of rounding up a herd of wild horses. The first is to use a helicopter to scare the horses into running into a funnel area where they can then be corralled in. The other is to use a "Judas" horse. This horse is trained to lead a herd of horses into a place where they can be corralled in. The Judas horse is released into a herd of wild horses, and then leads them into be captured. These techniques are sometimes both used to capture a herd. The helicopter herds the horses into a smaller area where the Judas horse is released to lead them into an enclosed area.

Wild or feral horses should not be approached as this can alter their natural behaviour. They may also become territorial and try to defend themselves by attacking. Horses are big strong animals and wild or feral horses have learned they can use their size to their advantage, so it's best to steer clear.
The nomadic wild horses never stayed in one place for long.

The Indians got their first horses from the Spanish. When the Spanish explorers Coronado and DeSoto came into America they brought horses with them. This was in the year of 1540. Some horses got away and went wild. But, the Indians did not seem to have done much with these wild horses. They did not start to ride or use horses until much later.
They wouldn't be much use against tanks and such, so probably not.
