In addition, the CO2 dissociates at high temperatures (in the arc) and then recombines when the temperature drops at the workpiece level. The recombination is an exoterm reaction which yields the heat taken at the dissociation In this way there is an additional heat gained at the level of the work piece which gives higher penetration. This happens only with bi-atomic gases (CO2).
