I am working on a paper on The Vicar of Wakefield and I've been doing some research on it. I know the story is similar to the story of Job. (He loses all his money and then has a lot of problems but stays true to his faith, enduring to the end and eventually, all his problems are solved and he lives "happily ever after".) Also, people disagree whether the story is intented to make you feel sorry for Dr. Primrose or just to make fun of him. The story kind of revolves around the relationship between a man and his faith, correct moral behavoir, the strict code of conduct of the day, and the rigid social ladder. That's about it. Disguises and trickery and edurance I suppose could also count. Anyway, I guess you have to decide the "spirit" of the book for yourself after you read it.
live a virtuous life through your misfortunes and you can still end up happy.

What is the major conflict in - The Vicar of Wakefield?

The major conflict in The Vicar of Wakefield would be the Vicar and his family vs. society and its falsehoods. Throughout the book the family is tempted to indulge in, and they sometimes actually do sway towards, the frivolous things of this life rather then being unattached and putting more weight on their actual character and morality. The family is continually forced lower and lower in worldly standards until they learn that the pleasures of this life are uniportant in comparison to moral dignity and family love. After this they are able to regain all their worldly pleasures which are then just gravy.
