  • kōiro(noun) conger eel, Conger verreauxi - greyish to black eel common on rocky reefs.
  • matamoe(noun) short-finned eel, Nguilla australis - a quite large type of eel, brown and grey in colour, found in rivers and caught in a hīnaki. He matamoe te ingoa, ā, he āhua rarahi tonu. He āhua pākākā me te mōhinahina ka whakauru haere (HP wh15).Its called a short-finned eel and it's rather large and quite brown with touches of grey.
  • tuere(noun) blind eel, hagfish, Eptatretus cirrhatus - a primitive eel-like fish that lives only in marine habitats. Though blind, hagfish are predators of other fish, which they detect by movement and smell.
  • pāra(noun) frostfish, Lepidopus caudatus - an eel-like fish with a silver elongated body and large, dagger--ike teeth. See alsotaharangi.
  • piharau(noun) lamprey, Geotria australis - an eel-like fish that has a sucker mouth with horny teeth and a rasping tongue. See also korokoro.
  • ōrea(noun) New Zealand long-finned eel, Anguilla dieffenbachii- usually grow up to 1.2 metres long weighting 10 kilograms, but exceptionally can be 2 metres long weighing over 50 kilograms. Females are typically twice as long as males. See also kirirua.
