This may be due to the intense helplessness of a smaller, less strong woman who is assaulted by a male.
My father, Lieutenant J. G. (at the time) John Wallace McNabb of Newtown, Pa. dropped the last bomb in World War II. It occurred,on August 15, 1945 at 6:45 am. He was the "tail end Charlie" of 16 Hellcats flying off the U.S.S. Ticonderoga. The Ticonderoga was attached to the Third Fleet Task Force under the command of Admiral Bull Halsey. Their intended target was to continue the bombing of Tokyo airfields, however the sky was overcast and they could not see their target. They were forced to circle above. They continued their search, and when they found a break in the clouds, they spotted an airstrip along the coast near the town of Chosi. Four of the hellcats remained upstairs for recognizance. The remaining 12 others peeled off on their typical 60 degree dives. Aiming for a revetment at the strip's edge, my father, (who was the last man of those twelve hellcats), dropped his "500 pound general purpose" bomb. As he came out of his dive, "the radio was talking". They were told "to cease all bombing and to rendezvous and return to the ship, bringing their bombs if they had them." Two hours later when they approached the ship they could see the men jumping on the deck in excitement. As he hit the deck, his captain told him of the Presidents announcement that the war was over. He was later informed that he was credited with dropping the last bomb in World War II. The bombing actually continued after the H bomb that was dropped on Nagasaki. Japan refused to accept the Pottsdam accord. It was because of their refusal to surrender that the bombing continued. They didn't surrender until August 15, 1945. (August 14th in the states) My father went in the reserves after the War. In 1952, he was recalled to duty and continued his Navy career as a pilot. In addition, to being a member of "the bomber fighting squadron VBF 87 aboard The Ticonderoga", he was also a member of squadrons VR-1, VR-22, and VQ-4. He participated in the Dominican Republic Invasion, and fought in the Viet Nam War until he retired from the Navy in 1969. As of this writing, he is still alive at the age of 92, and resides in Elkton, Md. signed Ken McNabb (5/20/2013)
