I'm not sure that there is a maximum number: I have one folder in My Docs which contains over 3000 files arranged within numerous sub-folders - some of them going down to sub-sub-sub folders!

expand is (+)sign means that the folder have sub folders but not display. if you click the (+)sign the sub folders will display, and the sign will change to (-). collapse is (-) sign mens that sub folder are display. if you click the sign (-) the folders will disappear and the sign will change to (+).
