That depends on what makes it illegal. Some gun offenses are misdemeanors with a maximum penalty of 1 year in jail but a more common sentence would be 12 months probation and a $500 fine. Other gun offenses are felonies that carry a 5, 10, or even 20 year prison term as the maximum punishment. Sometimes a person can break a few different gun laws all at the same time (convicted felon in possession of a stolen gun that's had the serial number filed-off and carrying it in a school zone).
